Leading With Lollipops by Drew Dudley
Leaders often fail to understand the importance of being playful, but that doesn’t have to be the case. The author of Leading with Lollipops, Drew Dudley, argues that the importance of being playful is a necessary part of every person’s leadership role. By giving out lollipops, people can demonstrate their appreciation for other people and their work. This is the perfect way to encourage positive behavior.
Everyday Leadership
A recent TEDx talk from educator Drew Dudley highlights how people can take advantage of their daily opportunities to lead in a meaningful way. In a conversation with two students, Dudley shares his story of how his act of kindness made a difference in the life of one young girl. Then, students respond to two other students by telling about an inspiring lollipop moment in their lives.
Despite his TEDx talk, Drew Dudley is a best-selling author of a leadership book. He encourages school principals to redefine leadership by looking at small, everyday moments that make a difference in someone else’s life. His message is simple and powerful: leaders must focus on today rather than long-term outcomes. Ultimately, every action will affect the lives of other people.
A recent visit to Campbell University inspired Dudley to speak about the importance of leading by example. He met a freshman girl who was unsure about her future at university. She had just been accepted to a prestigious university, but was feeling nervous and overwhelmed. She was about to give up on attending. However, her story inspired others and led to an invitation to the wedding of the girl’s future husband.
TED Talks have become popular because they expand the idea of the ‘invisible’ moments in everyday life. Taking the time to share your personal lollipop moment with others will have a powerful impact on your own life. You may not even know that your actions have a ripple effect. It might even change your business climate or volunteerism. The possibilities are endless when you think about it.

It all began with a woman who was on the verge of quitting college. Drew was in a charity awareness campaign at her university when he met her. He was speaking with a group of students during registration day when he handed out lollipops. The woman who gave him the lollipop later married the guy who gave it to her. Drew was so touched by her generosity, she never forgot the gesture.
Dudley’s TEDx Talk has sparked conversations about leadership in a new way. He says that leadership is the ability to inspire others. Although some people are better known as leaders than others, he calls his inspiration the “Lollipop Moment.” His speech describes how he introduced two students in a line at freshman orientation by handing them lollipops. Dudley later learned that one of them went on to marry the other.
The author of the book, Drew Dudley, teaches principals that everyday actions have the ability to make a difference in a person’s life. The power of everyday actions cannot be understated. It’s often the smallest acts that can create the greatest impact. And many people fail to notice the small gestures that make a difference in others’ lives. Dudley’s speech has been watched over 2.5 million times, and is an example of the power of everyday leadership.
Identifying core values
Identifying core values is an important step in personal growth. Core values are the beliefs and principles that guide your actions. Living according to your core values gives you a sense of purpose, self-worth, and clarity in life. You will feel more content, happy, and fulfilled. You will also have greater clarity and self-awareness. When you discover your core values, you can live your life accordingly.
If you find it difficult to determine your core values, try writing them down on a piece of paper. Sort the values into three categories and select the top three to six “very important” values. Don’t be critical during this exercise. Go with your instincts. It might take you a while to figure out which values you really want to live by, but you’ll find out quickly! You’ll be surprised by what you discover about yourself!
Sharing lollipop moments
Drew Dudley, the star of the TEDTalk “Sharing Lollipop Moments” inspired a new campaign to mark the Kloof Street store’s second birthday. Inspired by the simple gesture, Chantal Louw re-launched the Kloof Street shop as a “lollipop thank you” campaign. While Drew may not have had the lollipop moment, his inspirational TED Talk did.
One day, while working on a charity awareness campaign, Drew gave a lollipop to a young woman who was on the verge of quitting college. The woman, who was on the verge of quitting college, later married the guy who handed it to her. Drew did not even know this story until four years later, when the girl was about to graduate and would have to face the nagging realization that her dream would never come true without the help of a lollipop.
In his TED Talk, Drew Dudley shares a touching example of how a lollipop moment can change a person’s perspective. In college, he gave a lollipop to a freshmen who was hesitant to stay. The girl was persuaded to stay, and Drew never forgot the impact of that moment. The story inspired him to do better the next time, and he is grateful for the chance to share it with people.
